A large and handsome antique Barbedienne French patinated hollow cast bronze antique portrait bust of Jean Léopold Nicolas Frédéric, Baron Cuvier. Marked "F. Barbedienne Fondeur" on the side and /stampednumbered 107 inside.

Measures About : 21"H x 13"W x 9"D. Normal surface wear but overall very fine antique condition. Late 19th century I assume.

Jean Léopold Nicolas Frédéric, Baron Cuvier (1769-1832), known as Georges Cuvier, was a French naturalist and zoologist, sometimes referred to as the "founding father of paleontology". He was a major figure in natural sciences research in the early 19th century and was instrumental in establishing the fields of comparative anatomy and paleontology through his work in comparing living animals with fossils.
