Spanish Colonial Silver Side Saddle Stirrup

Made of very heavy gauge sterling silver from the mid 19th century, unmarked. This outstanding hand crafted stirrup for a lady in South America, is from an equestrian family, for riding side saddle. It is decorated with pierced and repousse birds, fabulous workmanship, and engraved borders. Circa 1860, it is made in a traditional style, they were made as a single, not made in pairs. It has a hinged action, the rectangle loop is made to hold the leather strap, it tips up for the woman to slip her foot into the silver shoe. In good condition it measures 8 ¾ inches long x 4 inches wide and weighs over a pound, about 480 grams.
