Beautiful, hand beaded, Native American Indian belt, bandolier strap, blanket strip or other. This great piece is done in the style where every bead is sewn down as opposed to stringing and sewing several beads down at once. In other words, very time consuming work. A real labor of love for some lucky family member, have a look at the back of the belt and zoom in on the thread work. The colors and pattern were kept simple, just opaque white, blue, and a yellow gold. There is also a small square at each end with metal lined clear transparent beads. The design is a simple geometric combination of these beads with the center design being four squares connected, then bordered on each side with stylized 4 directions branching out from the center with a larger 4 direction design. The beading is linen thread sewn and the belt itself is canvas (military?) with cotton flour sack fabric sewn on each end. It is a long continuous strip, I don't see any place where it was two strips sewn together. It is not edge beaded, but each end has a native leather tie with several basket and tile beads strung on it. The background of white beads has approximately 10 beads missing in total, hard to see because the work is so tight and the beads are so close and small. The white beads are also getting an aged blue tint, just what we like to see when determining age.

LENGTH: 34" plus 4" ties on each end
WIDTH: 2 1/2" wide

Would make a wonderful little boy's blanket strip, or can be used in other ways. Also is beautiful hanging on your wall or across your sofa table, sofa back, dining table and so on. Or make something for yourself to wear utilizing it. Lot's of choices.

The colors seem to shout Blackfoot, but it was purchased at an auction 40 years ago and there was no family name associated with it, so my only clues are to observe the color and design choices and then the style of beading the maker chose. It has been worn, but other than the few missing beads it does not show any damage. There are a few stains on the back, absolutely no odors of any type

Best guess on age is very late 1800's into 1920's.
