An ornate cake basket by one of the best Victorian silver plate companies that still has much silver.
The basket has a wonderful floral stamped central well. There are arched Gothic bands at the mouth and above the feet. The feet have floral arabesques as well as the handle finial and handle mounts. There is a monogram in gothic script on the cavetto. I think they are the letters are U R U, but am not certain about the “U”.
There is the impressed mark on the base that reads MADE AND PLATE GUARANTEED BY JAMES W TUFTS BOSTON MASS. These words encircle a star with the letter T inside. There is also the production number 2706.
9 ¾” (24.8 cm) diameter x 2 ½” (6.4 cm) tall. 9” (22.9 cm) tall with handle extended. Weighs 1 lb 7.3 oz (660 g)
There are wear scratches on the cavetto. The rim is slightly bent in a couple of places. The four feet don’t rest perfectly flat on a surface and so there is a slight wobble. The handle stands upright on its own. The basket has shined up nicely and still has some silver.
A great silver plate cake basket to serve pastries on or to add to your Victorian décor.
