Antique Lacquer Japanese Albumen Photo Album As Is - image 1 of 15

This is a amazing Japanese photo album from the latter part of the 19th century.
They are albumen photos which is a special way of developing the film and then they are hand colored.
There are 44 pictures one on each side of 22 pages.
Some of the images are fascinating with pictures of scenery, of Nagasaki, of Geisha, of a writing professor, of what I assume are prostitutes behind a grill and of prisoners with wooden square collars around their necks.
There are also some pictures of people called the Klings which may be refugees at that time in Japan.
A fascinating historical compilation of Mieji period Japan.

Condition: The lacquer album covers are scratched and there are two heads missing on the ladies and the spine had duck tape reinforcing it which has now separated. Could be restored.
The pictures are a bit faded with some of them having an X on the matte which I think, designated the ones taken by a certain photographer Kusakabe Kimbei.
With all this said, the photos are lovely and very interesting and would be great mounted with mattes in a double view frame.

Size: 10 1/2 by 8 5/8 sight size.
