A Lady with handkerchief is an early 8 1/2"" hand carved and hand painted polychrome wooden figure of a woman dressed in provincial costuming. Her base is stamped "Made in Russia," indicating that she was handcrafted in Russia pre-1922. After the Russian Revolution, these figures were stamped "Soviet Union," according to the Colemans. Trihedral dolls were carved from one piece of wood and then painted expressively in traditional colors and costuming by peasants. The figures represented men, women, and children from various positions in Russian society. Lady with handkerchief remains in sturdy condition, with soil, wear, and nicks/chips commensurate with age. She is an early and historically significant Russian treasure.
