Offered is an antique tole tray. The hand painting is exceptionally well done, and the flowers are painted in a stylized, single paint stroke often found in the Venation and Florentine tole painting of Italy. This piece is exceptionally large and is hand painted on thick tin measuring 27 inches round and 2 inches deep. It weighs approximately 9 lbs.
The condition is very good given the age and history of the piece.. More importantly, the tray is rendered with a stylized motif of flowers done in single strokes of the brush. There is a raised border trim and the edge of this is hand punched all the way round. The surface is very painterly with ninety five percent or more original paint.
If you look closely, you will see a very fine, small, black on white band around the inside edge acting as a border to the composition. Further scrutiny reveals a surface texture sometimes referred to as an alligatored surface. You see meandering light lines only time can produce and that look of antiquity that cannot be copied.
This is a unique and special piece all around. It is the finest as well as the largest tole-ware I have carried in forty some years. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.
