Original Signed Guan Yin 'Goddess of Mercy' Playing Harp Musical Instrument Asian Deity Oil Painting - image 1 of 11

For your consideration is a very beautiful, original oil painting depicting the image of Guanyin (Guan Yin), the East Asian deity of mercy. She is the bodhisattva associated with compassion as venerated by Mahayana Buddhists. The image shows her sitting on a lotus flower while playing the harp.

The name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin, which means "Perceiving the Sounds (or Cries) of the World". Some Buddhists believe that when one of their adherents departs from this world, they are placed by Guanyin in the heart of a lotus, and then sent to the western pure land of Sukhāvatī.

The painting was rendered in oil on what appears to be burlap, but could be an older, thicker variety of canvas. It measures 24" high and 20" wide, unframed.

It is signed in the lower right corner, but we cannot make out the signature.

This painting was purchased from a local estate and was well-protected since it had been hand-wrapped in clear plastic (self-destructing from age when we found it). We finished removing the plastic for better visibility and to determine if there was damage. This painting is without any damage or evidence of repair and has been nicely preserved as a result of its protective cover.

Circa 1950s, this piece was most likely purchased in Asia by a traveling tourist and brought to the US. It is a lovely depiction of the Goddess of Mercy deity and will be even more beautiful when framed.
