Dated 1925, this beautifully pierced and repousse sterling silver oval bread tray as produced by Gorham and based on the work of Whiting, a silver company purchased by Gorham in 1924. The marks of both companies are stamped on the bottom showing that the piece dates from the transition period. The tray has the classic long oval shape with a flat bottom well and sloping sides. It is based on the classic "Puritan" shape but has been gorgeously embellished with two different reticulated designs sandwiching a raised repousse and chased garland of flowers pattern. The center is inscribed with as monogram-"P"?. The bottom is stamped GORHAM, the Whiting hallmark, STERLING, 4463 G, and the Gorham date mark (winged foot of Hermes) for 1925.
The tray measures 12" x 6" x 1 7/8" deep. Weight is 225.1 grams ( 7.24 troy ounces). Condition is quite fine, just some very light scratches from polishing.
