Antique figural cast iron inkwell in the form of a crab. This is a realistic rendering of a crab. I grew up in Southern New Jersey, and this is the size and shape of our blue crabs. This piece opens up to reveal an inkwell. There is no separate ink insert, it is built in. The size is 7 inches across, 5.5 inches back to front, and 1.5 inches deep. The lid is attached to a hinge, with cotter pin as hinge pin. The lid stays open in place for use. Black paint appears to be original. A tiny bit of oxidation, but not much. You can oil it in order to inhibit rust, but I like to leave antiques alone, so that is up to you. Whether you collect seafood antiques or inkwells, this is a great addition to your collection.
