This beautiful, Art Nouveau, coin case is known as a ‘Porte Louis’ in French or a sovereign holder in English. As both the louis and the sovereign are no more it remains a lovely antique curiosity. This one is marked for 800 silver with a maker’s mark I don’t recognise.
The round Porte-Louis measures 1¼” (3.2cms) across. It weighs 13.1 grams.
On the front and back is an exquisite repoussé design of vine leaves and mistletoe, At the top is a large ring for attaching to an albert or guard chain. When you press the knob at the top the case springs open.
The coin holder is on a spring. On the edge is the mark ‘800’ and a maker’s mark. The case snaps shut with a click.
In fine antique condition this exquisite piece would also make a fine pendant. It will arrive in a gift box.
