This outstandingly beautiful French, cross pendant was made by the company, Bressans, in the eastern French city of Bourg en Bresse. Bressans has been making beautiful enamel jewellery since 1850. They work with French 800-900 silver and 18 carat gold. The designs are hand crafted to a unique method . This one is set in silver with an obscure mark but tests as 800-900 silver quality.
The pendant is hard to date but I believe circa 1900 -1910. It is generously sized and measures 2” (5cms) long, including the top ring, by 1½” (3.6cms) across. It weighs a substantial 6.5 grams.
This wonderful enamelled and jewelled pendant has maximum impact. It has the most exquisitely enamelled ovals with a central cushion shape. The ovals have a gleaming red, black and rich emerald green backgrounds. They are decorated with four, flower shaped white enamels. They are highlighted with translucent red and green enamel ‘jewels’. The central enamel is in red with similar decoration but topped with a twinkling green paste. The enamel is enhanced with delicate, gold leaf curlicues.
Each enamel is bezel set in silver. The centre is accented with pretty silver finials.
At the top is a ring with unidentifiable marks. Attached is a substantial bail to hold the chain.
This opulent and very rare, cross pendant is in excellent antique condition. It has no enamel loss. It will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
