I am not a silver expert, but I have collected unusual little boxes, or toys, forever. This puffy, heavy silver (better than 0.925) fish wiggles from side to side and has 2 secret compartments. I think cloves were dispensed from the mouth (for the breath) and snuff was held in the body of the fish (for the nose). It has a mark in a rectangular cartouche on the neck of the body that looks like GB, and an indecipherable touch mark opposite. The eyes are high domed bezel-set natural 6mm sapphire cabochons. The dorsal fin does not move. This is a weighty piece--I don't have a scale. It's not flimsy like the more commonly found 19th c. fish containers--the silver is of substantial gauge (see photos enlarged). The inside is richly gilded; the fittings are snug. You can see the quality in the hinges. It measures 3 & 3/8" long, 1 & 3/4" dorsal to belly, and 1 & 1/8" wide. I have never seen another as nice. hoping to find this one a good home :)
