This is a fabulous original George III period stipple engraving with etching! It has a wonderful English country house look due to its SUPERB circular Georgian gilt frame..
This fine, original engraving was produced in England circa 1780. The engraving was drawn and engraved by William Wynne Ryland (b abt. 1732 – d 1783). William Wynne Ryland was a celebrated English engraver who pioneered stipple engraving. Interestingly he was executed for forgery, this was a big story at the time. He left a widow and six children. His widow kept a print shop for many years in Oxford Road, London.
The engraving is titled ‘Infancy’ and features a portrait of a young child. The engraving is of the highest quality. The Georgian circular gilt Gesso frame is also splendid quality. We find framer/gilders details verso for a business in Hill Rise, Richmond, England.
This large print would have been destined for a large country house, or on display in the stair way of a large town house. Reference: Accession number e.572-1936 in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s online collection.
