19th Century Sorrento Ware Photo Album, DALE family Interest, England and Australia - image 1 of 15

A very attractive inlaid marquetry photograph album with gilt edges. This small 19th century album dates to the 1900 period and would have originated in Sorrento, Italy - known for their quality crafted inlaid wooden items. The rare point regarding this small Victorian album is that the original owner had this album commissioned in Sorrento, as his initials GD ( for George Dale) are inlaid to the rear cover. This album is full of original carte de visite (CDV) photographs that relate to the Dale family. Beneath many of the images details of the sitter have been written. There is also an introductory passage written to the interior front page of the album. If you are a Dale family member this will be a superbly rare treasure to add to your family history. We really hope that we can unite it with its ancestors.

Size: 6 inch by 4 3/4 inch by 2 1/8 inch ( 15.5 cm by 12.5 cm by 5 cm)

This Sorrento ware album features a typical Italian scene to the front with rural villager on his way to market - all inlaid in different woods. We have a chunky leather spine with inlaid initials GD to the reverse cover. One opens the album to see the front end paper with hand written script that reads:
" approximate dates written in by Mary Stammers aged 82 in 1975 - niece of Louie Dale. This book was the property of George Dale who lived in Australia - & returned to England about 1907."

Then follows 33 CDV photographs some with family members identified underneath. A further 6 inserts are unrelated CDVs being Theatrical, a hand drawn cartoon image etc. The first CDV photograph of a bearded gent is an early 1840s Albumen CDV by Diamond & Leonard Photographers of Royal Polytechnic Institutions 309 Regent Street, London.

We have researched the Dale family to corroborate the information given in the album. We can confirm from Genealogical research the following information. We do believe that a couple of the inscriptions written by Mary aged 82 relate to the wrong brother, I think we can forgive her.

The front page inscription was written by Mary Louisa Stammers who was born in 1892 at Brightlingsea, Essex, England niece of Louisa (Louie) Dale (nee Cooper).

George Edgar Dale (1855 -1941) was the son of William Dale (1828-1866) and Elizabeth Porter (1818-?). George was manager of a Chemist. George was born 25th May 1855 in St Osyth, Essex and died 15th August 1941 in Essex, England. He got married in 1891 to Hannah Louise Green (1862 to 1914). He appears to have done some travelling to Australia afterwards. Probably on his foreign travels when he purchased this album.

George had a brother Alfred Edward Dale 1853–1939 who was a farmer at St Osyth, Essex, England. In 1880 Alfred married Louisa (Louie) Cooper (1856-1931). They had the following children Cooper Edward Dale(1881–) St Osyth, Essex, England who married Eva Mary Smith of Clacton on Sea (who in 1888 were both residents of Australia - West Wyalong, Riverina, NSW). Frank Alfred Dale(1883–) St Osyth, Essex, England. Ellen Louisa Dale(1885–). Leonard G Dale(1886– killed in WW1)

George had a second brother William Dale Born 1856?

George had a Sister Elizabeth J Dale born in 1857 at St Osyth, Essex, England who in 1898 married John Harrington Ardley (1855-1924) of Bradwell, Essex.

George Dale had a third brother Henry (Harry) Albert Dale(1858– 1936) St Osyth, Essex, England
