Regency Child's Sewing Pannier, Tunbridge Ware Sewing Box, Whitewood Basket, Painted Ware, English, Circa 1810 - image 1 of 11

A superb little all original child's sewing basket from the 1800 to 1820 period. This gorgeous little sewing box comes with excellent provenance, from the estate of a well known English needlework tool collector and retailer. More items to follow from her collection over the coming weeks.

This is an early Tunbridgeware item when plain wood sycamore (whitewood) items were hand painted with simple lines or floral/cottage designs. They could also have a small hand colored engraving pasted to the center. Many of the engravings were printed by the Wise family of Tonbridge, being especially miniaturized for this purpose. The entire surface was then lacquered many times.

In 1810 the Maidstone Journal an advertisement ran for " Wanted a Man and a Boy in the Tunbridge-ware Line - The Man will be required to make White Wood Boxes in the best manner for Ladies to paint on; the Boy to make sliding, Puzzle Boxes and other small articles: and both may have constant employment."

Our sewing box has retained all of its original fixtures and fittings. We see the original bentwood swing handle, with original two concentric circle carved bone side knobs. The pin hinge lid has bands of red and black hand painted squiggle work with central pasted engraving of a hand colored monochrome rural scene. We see bucolic cattle drinking in the water meadows, an old priory ruin behind them. You lift the lid via a small fabric tab to reveal the original Regency pink paper lined interior with all interior compartments intact. Sewing contents shown in image is for ideas only and are not included

Size: Height 1.75 inch, or 4 inch with handle raised. 4 3/8 inch wide by 3 3/8 inch deep. (4.5 cm (10 cm with handle raised) by 11.5 cm by 8.5 cm)

Condition: This cutie is 200 plus years old it will not be pristine. Age related surface crazing to the original lacquered lid. Minor wear consistent with age and to the body. The ribbon tab to the lid appears to be a replacement.

A little stunner for your Regency period sewing tool and accessory collection.
