A scarce, top quality German Papier Maché circular Snuff Box lid by Stobwasser of Brunswick, Germany of the circa 1800 to 1810 period. The lid painted with an 18th Century Dutch Kitchen scene after David Teniers The younger 1610 to 1690.

The inside of the lid inscribed in red "Das innere einer holländischen Klche Nacht Tenniers" translated as 'The inside of a Dutch kitchen after Tenniers'. There is number 15067 in matching red script to the left inside lip of the lid. Please see the original painting by Teniers called 'Kitchen Interior' where you will see that the detailing on this small scale snuff lid is exceptional, and clearly the work of one of the Stobwasser factories top artists.

Just study the detail, all of the activity in this huge Dutch kitchen. The central female servant is peeling potatoes and her very young kitchen boy/son brings her a tray of refreshment. Meanwhile around her are her tasks for the rest of the day, more vegetables to be peeled in the basket on the floor, fish to be gutted, birds to be plucked, a hare to be prepared. A swan pie centerpiece to be finished, a goose and several game birds hanging above her head to be prepared at some stage. Behind her other servants are hard at work too, one turns meat on the furnace like spit roast, while another female and male servant to his side appear to be ironing a garment with a hot stone. Above them a large cupboard with plenty of shiny pewter jugs ready to be filled. One can almost feel the heat, hear the hustle and bustle, and sympathize for those overworked souls.

Sadly this lid is all that remains of the original snuffbox. The Stobwasser name would have been written in red script to the interior base.

Size: Diameter 3 3/4 inch or 9.5 cm

Condition: As Found - with surface scratches to the center of the scene, a rub to the ladies blouse, general fine craquelure commensurate with age. As mentioned above, the side lip is missing from the lid leaving an uneven chipped edge, with further indent at approx 8 o'clock. The snuff box base is missing completely. All clearly shown in our many images.

A rare scene by Stobwasser, it will look stunning framed.
