This rare bebe doll is truly superb. From her dulcet expression to her spellbinding spiral eyes eyes, this textbook example of the Portrait Jumeau will delight even the most discerning curator. With her sweet mohair wig, her exquisite antique keystone shoes, her wonderful antique maroon Velvet and silk frock and fancy trimmed antique straw hat, she is a singularly a la mode bebe.
Take a moment with her portraits; the images describe her more poignantly than I ever could. However, I will address value-points, and chronological import in the history of the Jumeau firm. Jumeau produced his first bebe in 1877 or so, and had difficulty deciding whether or not to make the bebes out of papier mache, which was unbreakable, or to use bisque, which the fashion dolls they had been making up to that point were made of. Emile-Louis, son of Pierre-Francois, convinced his father that the bisque bebe was the way to go (despite Pierre's reluctance to even consider making a bebe,) and the Premiere and Portrait Jumeau bebes were born. Two lines of bebes were produced, the "Deluxe Portrait" bebe, modeled after the "Deluxe Poupee" model, and the budget line bebe that is known as the "Premiere" model.

The model seen here is the former, "Portrait" model, characterized by an extremely subtle, pale coloring, lined eye socket cuts, and very fine quality decoration that is lacking in the "Premiere" models. The Jumeau book by Francois Theimer details that this model was more expensive when it was produced because of the artistry and delicacy of the painting, and it was made at the same time as the Premiere, the only difference being the price and quality of bisque and particularly eyebrow painting. For more information, consult pages 284-292 of the Jumeau Book. We'd be happy to include page scans with this lovely bebe. All of that said, it bears mentioning that the Jumeau book, which is considered to be the landmark text of this subject, does not distinguish between 'First' and 'Second' series Portrait dolls, only the Premiere and Deluxe bebes of this period. Because of this distinction, we will only term this lovely girl to be a Portrait Jumeau of the finest quality with open almond eyes and the sweetest face. We believe she's worth every penny to the connoisseur of Jumeau bebes, so get her before she, too, is marked 'Sale Pending.'
