Truly a super rare, outstanding example of one of the elusive fortune teller doll made for the French trade. Dressed in a French regional costume, this little lady guards many secrets beneath her voluminous skirt. A collection of approximately 200 folded sheets of colored paper with hand written in French fortunes is tucked between her undergarments and must have brought hours of delight to her previous owners! I am showing some of the fortunes in the photos with the English translations written above. With large, enchanting original brown fixed eyes, her original brown mohair wig with two long braids hanging down her back, her original head cap and an addition lace bonnet cover her pulled back hair. Her shapely bodice is corseted in a regional style costume that is sewn over her cloth body.

~This STUNNING 1009 Fortune Teller antique doll is available on layaway!!! Take up to 5 months to pay for her. Just give our office a call at 718,859.0901 to discuss details, send us an email, or just let us know at checkout that you'll be needing time to pay!~

She has a wonderful pale bisque swivel socket head on a bisque shoulder-plate with brown glass inset eyes, open mouth with three upper teeth, dimpled chi and pierced in ears. She is on her original cloth body with perfect bisque arms bent at the elbows. (The body cannot be examined due to the sewn-on costume and inaccessibility because of the paper fortunes method of attachment.)

We can see her polished cotton half slip and her pantaloons of lace edged cotton. The fortunes are formed by multi-colored folded pieces of paper, each with a hand written (in French) inscription foretelling a fortune. She wears a wonderful antique velvet outer corset with metallic cord fastening, a cream cotton blouse underneath, a black silk skirt and a red silk front panel to represent and apron with a lace edge. Black Chantilly lace trim accents he décolleté. She has her original brown mohair wig, black stockings and reproduction brown leather Jumeau shoes with brown silk rosettes.

MARKS: S 1 H 1009 / DEP /St

CONDITION: Excellent. The head has pale, glowing bisque with excellent painting of features and lovely cobalt brown inset glass eyes with painted upper and lower lashes, and multi stroke brows delicately modeled closed mouth with shading and accent lines, tapered fine brows, dimpled chin and pierced in ears. Some wear and soiling to the costume and the front panel of the skirt and lace are later additions in antique fabrics. The paper fortune telling panels with minor wear and occasional curling of the edges—but in remarkably good condition considering the frailty of the paper and the fact that this doll was likely produced in the 1890s. The bisque swivel head is loose but there is little chance that it will dislodge. I have only ever had one other such doll in my entire 35 year career of dealing in antique dolls. I must be crazy to sell her!
