This is one of those interesting pieces that makes its way from England to the US from time to time, and is therefore not something seen here often. It hails from the Thames Rowing Club in London, and was the trophy tankard Reeve Challenge Cup from the Putney Amateur Regatta Race run in 1937 - and it is engraved with that info. It was made by Crown Rose Cast Pewter and is marked with their maker info. Its a nice heavy piece with its original patina, right wear and wonderful handle and form. Its a bit over 5 inches tall and is 5 & 1/2 inches wide.

The Thames Rowing Club was founded in 1860, and still exists today. In the 1920s, the club was the home of Britain’s greatest-ever single sculler, Jack Beresford, who won a total of three Olympic gold medals and two silver medals over five games. Another one of its claims to fame is that HRH Princess Elizabeth visited there for their Head of the River Race in 1951, and photos exist from that visit, which would have been shortly before she actually became Queen in 1952. A nice piece of English history in this mug!
