Here is a wonderful pair of knitting needle guards from a home in Bridgton, Maine. I have never had a pair before, only seen them in my reference books. The shoes are sterling though unmarked but guaranteed to be such. They are in the shape of a slipper, probably Regency English and thus very early. Many English smalls were not marked for sterling as the maker had to pay a fee to do so. Later in the 19th century, English sterling items were required to be marked. The slippers themselves have a late Regency look to them by style because of the higher throat which developed to help keep the slippers on better. There is a hook to tighten the needles in the shoes so that knitting can not slide off the double ended needles when they are not in use. In excellent condition with no damage, all I can see is some silver polish residue left sometime in their past, but not by me. I only use a Sunshine cloth to brighten silver, so these needle guards are just the way they came out of the estate. If you collect early sewing or knitting tools these would make an excellent addition to your collection. If by any chance, you have Gay Ann Rogers’ “A History of Needlework Tools”, you will see a similar but later example of needle guard slippers on page 202. It is an excellent reference book for antique sewing items. The needle guard slippers would make a wonderful gift as well for a special person in your life who collects rare antique sewing items plus a great addition to your own collection..
