Antique Illustration Drawing of a Gibson Girl, Lady, Signed
An original work of art depicting a "Gibson Girl". Writers in the 1890s and early 1900s described the “New Woman” as an independent and often well-educated, young woman poised to enjoy a more visible and active role in the public arena than women of preceding generations. They agreed that the Gibson Girl represented the visual ideal of this new phenomenon. During her lengthy popularity, the Gibson Girl appeared in varied guises that highlighted her talents and interests as well as her beauty and social skills.
This fine example shows a lady of confidence. It is a drawing or illustration in watercolor, gouache and possibly tempera on paper and is signed "L John..." or something similar. The Illustration is in wood frame complete with old glass and a pretty beaded edge lining. This is BIG with overall dimensions of 30 3/4" high x 16 1/2" wide including the frame, the sugar and creamer set for a visual reference only, they are not included. The Illustration is in very good overall condition. The only thing to note are two tears in the paper on the top edge one approximately 3/4" and the other 1 1/4".
The Gibson Girl has a great decorative quality and is perfect for any antique decor.
