This is a very attractive black transferware Aesthetic Movement oval platter. The pattern is called Excelsior. It was made by the Old Hall Earthenware Company. It has the manufacturer’s backstamp on it as well as an English Registry Mark that dates it to January 9, 1880. There is also an impress mark on it that is so faint we can’t read it. The design on this platter is very nice. There is a consistent geometric pattern around the border. Within the center are images of a sailing ship, a pretty woodland landscape and more geometric designs.
It has a hairline crack on the back rim, crazing consistent with age and pottery of this type and there is some light staining on the back and front. Please check the pictures carefully. It has been priced for condition.
The platter measures approximately 14” long and 10 3/4” wide.
Selling this for Schell Antiques.
