How beautiful is this antique Victorian brides basket or bowl! This oval or folded sides bowl is cased satin glass in shakes of pink with ruffled rim and wonderful hand painted enamel flowers and gilded baroque flourishes. The bowl sits in a ribbon-like brass frame with vine and leaf "holders" on either side. We've taken lots of photos for your enjoyment.
The bowl measures 10 1/2" x 7 1/2" and is 4 1/4" high at its highest point. There are no chips or cracks and the enamel is in excellent antique condition. The delicate bow-like beaded brass frame is original but has been slightly bent over the years - nothing major but mentioned for accuracy. It appears that one of the leaves may have been re-attached at some point, and the leaves have a bit of tarnish.
We do not know the maker of this bowl. The underside has a ground and polished pontil, slightly concave where the metal flower is attached in the center bottom. We suspect that this is an English piece though it is unmarked.
Originally called Fruit Baskets or Fruit Bowls, what we call Brides Baskets today have been given that name because they were popular wedding gifts during the Victorian era.
