Childs Brown Transferware Dollhouse Dinner Set
ACORN CHINTZ
Charles Meigh Staffordshire, England c1840

This is a scarce miniature dinner set made for childs play or to accessorize an elegant pre-Victorian dollhouse. The color of the set is an earthy sepia brown against a creamy earthenware blank, finished with pearlware glaze. The set is decorated with finely engraved acorn flower blossom climbing on a lattice. The blank is shown in both a miniature dinner service and matching tea set in Lorraine Punchards Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the UK.

The set was made by Charles Meigh, an esteemed pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire ‘Potteries’ region of England in the early part of the 19th century. It is marked with a transfer printed pattern name ACORN CHINTZ, one of the undocumented patterns and marks used by Meigh.

The set consists of 35 pieces. The set is in overall great condition with just a the one or two minor chips and crack as described below.
The set is comprised of:

• 9 dinner plates, 3-3/4 inches in diameter (1 has in the making firing separation_;
• 6 soup plates, 3-1/2 inches in diameter;
• 6 luncheon plates, 3-1/4 inches in diameter;
• 3 graduated platters, 5 – 5-3/4 inches long (1 has old hairline crack);
• Soup tureen with lid on stand, 4-1/2 inches tall and 5-1/2 inches across (in the making firing line inside lid);
• Sauce tureen with lid on stand, 3-1/2 inches tall and 4-1/2 inches across;
• 2 open vegetable serving bowls 4-1/4 inches long; and
• 1 gravy pitcher 2 inches tall and 3-1/2 inches long (shallow chip on spout)

As described above, the set is in excellent condition. Stilt marks throughout, original to the making. Transfer wrinkles and other minor imperfections typical of the period. An extremely hard to find set, a perfect addition to an advanced collection of miniature transferware. A superb example of an early miniature dinner set. Offered as is.
