A fine engraving of a John J. Barralett (1747-1815) drawing by Benjamin Tanner (1775-1848), titled “America Guided by Wisdom: An Allegorical representation of the United Stated denoting their Independence and Prosperity”. This allegorical print shows America as a woman in Grecian dress and feathered helmet with Roman deities Minerva, Ceres, and Mercury to symbolize wisdom, commerce, and agriculture. To their right is a triumphal arch celebrating victories during the War of 1812 and an equestrian statue of George Washington. A beehive and cornucopia symbolize industry and prosperity while a woman spinning represents domestic work. This engraving is in good overall condition, with some border stains, minor moisture damage, and minor frame losses. Framed under glass in a molded period giltwood frame.
