This thread spool holder is a wonderful example of hand-crafted Victorian folk art. It is designed to hang on a wall. The back side shows that the piece is made from a single piece of rough-cut barn board. The front is beautifully hand carved and paint decorated. A tray is at the bottom and there are 6 wire hooks sticking out of the piece which are intended to hold spools of thread. The relief carving on the piece is skillfully done. It has a series of carved and painted leaves, berries and flowers with a central lozenge that contains a quaint framed painting of a serene homestead. The background is uniformly textured and decorated with light applications of color similar to that which is on the flowers and leaves. The front of the tray has similar carvings along with a second small painting of a flower. Look closely at the details of the workmanship in the photos and you will realize what a wonderful item this is.
It measures 16 ½ inches tall, is 13 ½ inches wide, and the shelf tray sits out 2 ¼ inches. The condition is very good with minor darkening from age and there is a small strip of wood chipped out on the bottom back edge where it cannot be seen when on display. It already has a wire hanger in place and will look wonderful hanging on a wall in your sewing room, den, or wherever you wish. In all regards, this is a unique item that is a wonderful piece of folk art.
