What a wonderful creation—R. John Wright’s interpretation of the Eugene Field poem, “Wynken, Blynken and Nod”. Written in 1889, today it is regarded by many as the most perfect childhood poem. As noted by R. John Wright, “it was Field’s belief that childhood was the most precious time of life and therefore, should be spent day dreaming, pretending and using one’s imagination before the realities and responsibilities of adult life were attained”. Wright’s appreciation of this poem is reflected in the whimsical rendition he designed.
A masterpiece of toymaking, this endearing piece stands 19" tall and is 12” long with the three toddlers standing 6” tall. The set consists of Wynken, Blynken and Nod, made of felt and dressed in sailor style felt sleepers with drop seats. They are fully jointed with little star shaped hands, hand-knotted mohair wigs and hand painted features (Nod with his eyes closed). The “Fishermen Three” carry fishing poles (Wynken’s has a fish attached) and a shimmering gilded net filled with felt stars and fish. They sail comfortably, cushioned with a cotton pillow, in their wooden shoe that is complete with a rudder, mast, and glittered felt sail. The shoe stands on a blue felt-covered wooden platform that is decorated with stuffed felt stars and fish. The fish have Austrian crystal eyes.
Wynken, Blynken and Nod was produced in 2004 in a limited edition of 100 for the 2005 Expo Collector Show in Washington DC. This set is #62/100. Each doll and the wooden shoe have their RJW buttons. The piece will come deconstructed in its original box with directions so you will be able to arrange the dolls to match the pictures or to your liking. It has its certificate of authenticity as well as a copy of the Eugene Field poem.
The set is in good condition with several points to note. The blues have faded a bit over time. There is some foxing to the box cover, some spots to the cotton pillowcase and a spot of foxing to Nod's (the blonde child who lies on the pillow) rear pajama button and surrounding felt. Despite these signs of age, Wynken, Blynken and Nod is an extraordinary piece, an important addition--perhaps even a center piece --for any R. John Wright collector's doll cabinet. Needless to say, it does not come on the market very often. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
