Marc Chagall's La Bastille (The Bastille) Limited Edition Lithograph
Please note: On the back of this lithograph it reads (see pic):
"This is a highly faithful rendition, made by a skilled artist AFTER (D'APRES) the art depicted. It is a color lithograph, done in a limited edition. Registered Copyrights, Library of Congress."
Chagall's original piece (1954) was a visual tour de force of the historic French landmark depicting the Place de la Bastille through Chagall’s dreamlike imagery and rich colors. Marking the location where the notorious Bastille prison once stood, the Place de la Bastille is a square in Paris with the July Column at its center, which commemorates the events of the July Revolution in 1830. A swath of color along the lower half of the image tapers into the head of a "Chagallean" cow at the right, while deep lavender and indigo mingle in the surrounding space. The juxtaposition between the muted pink and cool blues horizontally divides the July Column in the image, which visually evokes the fraught history marked by the column. Two figures at the bottom left of the composition lie so intertwined with each other that their bodies appear as one, sharing the same plump breasts, torso, and lower body. This amalgamation of figural bodies creates a visual allusion to the lives and histories intermingled at this landmark. The saturated colors and flowing composition of Marc Chagall’s La Bastille not only yields a compelling and beautifully dynamic image but also commemorates the richly layered history of the Place de la Bastille.
This is a beautiful limited edition lithograph rendition of his original piece. Softly touch the colors / paper with the tips of your fingers and you can actually "feel" a splendid gritty texture.
Including it's white border this lithograph measures 26" width x 20" height.
(Without the border it measures 23" x 17").
For both shipping and storage (and even display) purposes this lithograph comes with a wooden frame backing with a thick clear plastic cover. See pics #8/#9/#10. It can be easily removed -it is not stuck to it. You may choose to get this lithograph framed, or you may choose to store it away as an investment, in which case the wooden frame / plastic cover will protect it well.
The storage frame / cover measures 28 1/4" x 22 1/4" x 1 1/4".
CONDITION: This lithograph is in very good condition. Its colors are as "alive" and as "vibrant" as ever. Its white border does show signs of age and is frayed at its edges. Examine all the pictures closely. Zoom in & out of all the pictures to get a good sense of its exact condition: a picture tells a thousand words. The photos serve as a document as to its condition. You will receive the exact lithograph pictured here.
If you would like more pictures please message me. I'm not a professional photographer but have done my best with the photos here. I photographed this outside in natural light to try and capture the serigraph's true colors. Note that some computers / phones may display colors differently.
To re-iterate, on its back is printed: "This is a highly faithful rendition, made by a skilled artist AFTER (D'APRES) the art depicted. It is a color lithograph, done in a limited edition. Registered Copyrights, Library of Congress."
