This very pretty French faience pitcher is from the Faiencerie de Gien, in the town of Gien situated on the river Loire. It is a pichet à cidre, a cider pitcher that holds a full quart (32 ounces). The Renaissance Fond Bleu pattern is hand painted and features mythical creatures such as mermen, scrolled ribbons and foliage. The top and bottom rims have a gold rope design, as does the pale blue arched handle.

The pitcher is pristine, with just a bit of shelf dirt on the bottom rim. It stands 6 1/2 inches tall, measures about 5 1/4 inches across at the ridged belly and has a 2 3/4 inch wide mouth. The base is 3 5/8 inches in diameter and the weight is 1 pound, 3 ounces. The printed black mark on the bottom, consisting of three castles and the words GIEN France paint main (hand painted) and the artist's initials AB in blue, was used by the faiencerie from 1989 to 1998. It's a gorgeous piece of pottery, rich in color and detail and very eye-catching.
