A large antique, mid 19th century cast iron inkstand.
A heavy and very decorative piece made by E G Zimmermann, Hanau, Germany.
It has a shallow recess for holding pens, curved and scrolling edges with an all over design of scrolling vines and fruits, the details picked out in high relief.
To the lid there is an elaborate continuation of the same design, the lid is hinged and opens to reveal two ceramic ink pots, heavy glazed earthenware with one reading black.
The inkstand comes with the original cast iron pounce pot, this is an incredibly nice feature of the inkstand and pounce pots are increasingly scarce to find, moreso with the original inkstand.
Pounce was a type of powder made from ground substances such as cuttlefish that was used to clean or smooth paper prior to writing on it.
As better papers came around the pounce pot became rather defunct.
Overall a lovely decorative inkstand ready to be enjoyed once again.
German make, mid 19th century.
Good used condition overall, light surface rusting to the rear, ink pots are a possible later replacement and one has a small chip.
