A beautiful and unusual antique French inkwell, featuring storks with snakes.
Mid to late 19th century it is a single inkwell that stands on a wide pedestal base, the inkwell has a spiked finial lid and a circular well, the well supported by three standing storks in bright golden ormolu.
Each of the storks has a snake or serpent weaving through the beak with the head emerging from one side.
A very finely crafted piece made from silver plated metal, gilt ormolu and gunmetal, providing a lovely rich contrast of tones.
The wide base also doubling as a pen rest or drip tray.
It has no glass or ceramic liner.
The lid was hinged but this completely detached, old solder repair visible but the lid is now free fitting, see photos.
Unmarked, French make, C1870s
Good used condition overall, signs of use and wear commensurate with age, light surface wear and patina, lid detached and old repair visible.
