Here’s a lovely c1900, early Edwardian or late Victorian amethyst bar brooch in 16k yellow and white gold!
The focal point of this pretty brooch is a transitional round-faceted purple amethyst held by numerous claw prongs in an open-backed, ornamental basket setting. To the right and left side of the amethyst are a total of six hand-faceted white stones, possibly spinel or they may be glass, featuring a mixture of old European and transitional faceting. They have the general appearance of diamonds but do not test as diamonds and don't have a diamond's prismatic range of colors under magnification.
The brooch is unmarked and acid tests around 16K gold (gold on test stone holds solid with 14k solution and partially, slowly dissolves with 18k solution). Its white gold top provides a lovely backdrop for the amethyst, and the body of the brooch and its pin and clasp are yellow gold. This beautiful Belle Époque estate brooch bears its original pin and beautiful trombone clasp, capped with a bead of gold on a flower-like platform. We believe the piece is European, likely French in origin, and we wonder what incredible things it witnessed in ~c1900 France!
