Odette Durand – Portrait of a Woman – Circa 1940
Portrait of a blue-eyed woman. Original oil on cardboard. Unsigned. On the back, a pencil drawing of a horse's head and with an artist's stamp mark.
Odette Durand, known as Dett, was born on 8 January 1885 in Paris. Gifted for drawing and not very interested in studies, she entered the Académie Julian in 1900, which had just opened its doors to women in 1897. A student of Georges Busson and Paul-Albert Laurens, her taste naturally led her to animal painting and portraits.
She exhibited her work regularly at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon de l'Hippique in Paris, and also in Toulouse, Pau and Biarritz. She already signed her works "Dett".
Odette Durand died on 14 June 1972 in Paris.
