Vintage Zuni Nora Leekity Hereford Head Channel Inlay Sterling Belt Buckle
Well known Zuni artist, Nora Leekity began making jewelry for the trade in the early 1940's. She is most well known for her channel inlay pieces. Her works of art are meticulously handmade of Sterling Silver, Turquoise, Pin Shell, Mother of Pearl, Gold-lipped shell, coral and Jet. This handsome placid Hereford graces this sterling buckle that measures 3" by 2" and weighs 44 grams. Notice the wraps on the part that attaches to the belt. It is to keep a narrow belt centered.
No signatures or maker marks but definitely the work of Nora Leekity. The buckle carries the social security number of a previous owner. Circa: 1950's. Tests to be sterling. No condition issues to report. Please see my other listing for more of Nora Leekity's fabulous work!
Nora Leekity work is published in Zuni Jewelry, the Art and the People, Vol 1, by Barbara and Ed Bell, American Indian Jewelry 1, by Gregory Schaaf.
