This mahogany tea or tobacco caddy exhibits workmanship and decorative motifs suggestive of English manufacture in the period of early George III, although it could well be American in origin. Each vertical side is serpentine, and all edges are chamfered. The canister tops are brass, and feature a star design, while the body of the canisters are tin. It retains its original key. The very rare imported French gilt verre eglomise (painting under glass) interior panel depicts (Africans) African-Americans carrying tobacco leaves.
CONDITION: Very Good. A few surface scratches. One canister is a little high, which causes the caddy cover to resist complete closure unless pressed firmly. Some small losses to veneer (see photos). Overall condition is commensurate with age and use.
DIMENSIONS: 4.75" high, 9" wide, 5.25" deep
WEIGHT: 2 pounds, 13.3 ounces
