This is a marvellous early 19th Century toleware spice box; decorated to the top with neo-classical scrolls and inscribed spice, opening to reveal individual canisters used for ginger, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and mace; with another canister probably for vanilla pods.
This is a complete set and even has the original working padlock and key, spices were a very expensive item and had to be kept under lock and key and were only used by wealthy households. The tin would have been held by the head cook.
