An early 1900s wooden statue Baoulé Waka Sona is a fine hand-carved wooden sculpture of a tribal female figure in a standing position with knees slightly bent. Carved from a solid piece of wood this figure has a well-balanced form, refined and serene facial features, and markers of gender, status, and achievement. It has an elaborate and carefully rendered coiffure, portrayed with generalized traits with grace and beauty in both anatomy and adornment. Embellished with cultural and distinguished markings on her neck, tattoos on her face, and over the stomach and back spinal design. Wearing 4 arm cuffs, and holding a pair of heavy pounding hammers, gives its wearers and viewers a sense of confidence and power, and social status. Baule, an African people from Ghana are an Akan group that is one of the largest ethnic groups in Côte d’Ivoire, a country in West Africa. Traditionally, farmers who live in the center of the Ivory Coast, have played a central role in the twentieth-century history of the country. Measurements are 19"H x 5"W x 5"D, weighing almost 3 pounds (2 lbs. 13 oz). The front part of the left foot has been repaired a long time ago but is otherwise in good condition consistent with age and use.
