Ottoman Turkey, West Anatolia, Kula region, cca 1900-1910. Hand-knotted wool rug on cotton foundation. Very fine wool and fine knotting.
Interesting collector piece, known among experts as "mezarlikli hali" ("cemetery rug"). Unlike "manzarali hali" rugs with houses and landscape, and unlike "gemili hali" (rugs with ships), this specific piece shows cemetery, kindly note the remarkable details of design. It is being supposed, that boat-shaped elements with cypress trees and tombs in the field (in two vertical and one horizontal rows) were remembrance of inevitable death/mortality of life and also serene passing-away, symbolizing in wider sense soul sailing into the world of Afterlife.
Very good condition. FINAL PRICE. Rare genuine piece.
MEASURES: cca 172 x 122 cm (cca 5 ft 8 in x 4 ft).
