This is a Beautiful, Gold Filled Engraved American Fountain Pen Co. Moore's Non-Leakable: retracting-nib safety, 3 3/4" long x slightly less than ½" wide, 1896 patent cap imprint, DATE: Sept. 8, 1996. Excellent CONDITION. The gold filled metal has been exceptionally sculptured with an engraved floral pattern and a cartouche which can be monogrammed. Superbly bold & in dimension the gold filled work against the black background is dramatic.

Marks: The pen is engraved on the base: "MOORE'S PAT. SEPT. 8-96 U.S.A. The nib is engraved: "AMERICAN FOUNTAIN".

The pen is in excellent condition. Please note that this pen has not been serviced and may need seal replacement.

Virtually all retracting-nib "safety" pens trace their origins to the 1890s, when all the key features used in following decades were patented. The Moore safety was no exception, based on patents of 1893 and 1896 and put into production in 1899. The Moore was distinctive in using a straight-line mechanism, in which a sleeve sliding over the lower barrel was pushed and pulled to extend and retract the nib. With the nib retracted, the cap can be screwed down to seal the barrel tight -- so tight, that Moore pens were shipped from the factory already filled with ink as proof of their other name: "Non-Leakable".
