A First Edition and gift copy of Washington Irving's classic American Fantasy, THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW. Published by Bell Publishing Co., Drexel Hill, PA in 1928. Dust jacket and book both in near fine condition. Dust Jacket bright with colorful front cover illustration of the headless horseman on a black steed and illustration of two gnomes under the jacket title. Tiny closed tear upper front edge near spine margin and some light soiling to rear of jacket. Jacket is protected in clear acid free mylar protective covering. Pastedown over cloth binding in perfect condition. Light bump to rear board lower corner tip. Internally, book is beautiful with clean, white blank end pages, no writing or markings of any kind, text block straight, thick page stock and there are no loose, torn or missing pages. Eight brilliant, colorful illustrations by illustrator Arthur Rackham, "who was the most prolific of the Edwardian English illustrators, known best for his detailed pen-and ink-drawings (Encyclopedia of Collectible Children's Books, Diane McClure Jones, 2008)". Black and white line drawings by Rackham throughout. Frontis illustration protected with captioned tissue guard and the remaining color illustrations protected with a blank page with vignette on one side and caption on opposite side of page. Height of book is 9 7/8" and width is 7 1/2". There are 102 pages as called for.
