"Deer Stories - Life-Like Pictures - Pictures in Third Dimension" was written by Martha King. Copyrighted in 1936 by Dickery Company, this is one of the first published books with stereoscopic photographs. Included with the book is an "Ortho-Scope", a pair of glasses with one red and one blue lens. Today these books are common and we even go to 3D movies, but during its time, this was a ground breaking book using a new technology. The book even touts the benefits for your eyes when looking at these stereo photos!
The front cover has a pocket for the Ortho-Scop. The first page reads, "Look at pictures through the Ortho-scope (the blue and red glasses attached to cover) and see the animals stand out from the page as though they were alive. The longer you look at orthovis pictures the clearer they will appear. Viewing such pictures is beneficial to the eyes.
The photographs are clear and the name of the type of deer is printed at the bottom of each photo. There are black and white illustrations of deer as well on several pages. The photos are resourced from the Field Museum of Natural History, though they don't say which Natural History Museum.
This soft cover book is an ex-library book which I don't usually purchase. But this book was so unique I felt it would be a fabulous gift for any stereoscopic enthusiast. The book has an illustrated cover with masking tape at the spine (probably someones attempt to repair it over the years). There is a crease as well as scuffing along the covers edges. A library card envelope is attached to the title page (see photos) and the envelope and the Ortho-Scope are intact. The first two pages have tears. One page has tape across the middle to repair the tear. The pages have some smudges and mild creasing (see photos). The spine is separated from a few pages at the bottom staple (see photos). The price reflects the condition of the book.
This unusual vintage book is a great gift for any photo bug or any stereoscopic collection.
