ORIGINAL FLORIDA HIGHWAYMEN -SAM NEWTON -Hall of Fame Artist - Outstanding Signed Original Oil Painting "Florida Springtime"

SAM NEWTON (American b. 1948) - Sam Newton's best works have always made me grateful that such wonderful talent existed, has been discovered, and can be enjoyed today. This is a painting that I feel is one of his best. The light dances on the water. Each tree has the exquisite fine coloring that is sometimes referred to as "technicolor." There is a profusion of lavender to purple flowers along the bank. The birds are very well done. Several types of trees are exquisitely recreated. The palm tree in the foreground is wonderful. The tree a bit further down has its reflection in the water done as only Sam Newton can do. And of course the clouds that fit so perfectly. Nothing in this painting screams for attention. Instead, every aspect is part of the entire harmony;part of the whole.

Sam Newton has achieved legendary iconic status in the world of art. He is one of the original nine Florida Highwaymen, and has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. His paintings have been skyrocketing in price, and now are selling for thousands of dollars.
A number of his paintings have reached the $15,000.00 to 20,000.00 range.

The Florida Highwaymen started painting in the 1950s and 1960s. A group of nine found comfort and spiritual sustenance in their art, since they labored in the orange groves each day. A white man, Albert Backus (American 1906-1991) who was a renowned artist considered the "Dean of Florida Painters" mentored this group, who became known as the "Highwaymen", and contributed a great deal to their styles. Because they were African-American, they were not allowed in galleries. Typically they painted on inexpensive materials such as Upson board, a roofer's material, and they sold their work out of the trunks of their cars. With paintings still wet, they loaded their vehicles and traveled the state's east coast, selling them door-to-door and store-to-store, in restaurants, offices, courthouses, and bank lobbies. Their work was finally recognized in the 1990s, and since have received numerous honors. Their work is in the collections of many notables, including former President Barack Obama. They have had exhibits in the major galleries in Washington, D.C. and across the country. A documentary movie is supposedly in the works. It was delayed due to the Covid crisis.
Their work is in the Smithsonian.

Many sellers are now trying to sell some lesser quality works BY SIZE! Size is only a factor if all other conditions are comparable. It is important to remember that many paintings by the original Florida Highwaymen were for quick commercial sales so definitely quality is an issue. I present only those works that reach the highest quality by my standards. This painting certainly reaches those standards.

Also very much worth collecting are the Second Generation Movement artists. Tracy Newton, Sam's son. has obviously inherited quite a bit of talent from his iconic father. As a matter of fact, I mistook one of Tracy's paintings for that of his father! His prices have already been going up rapidly and he has an ever increasing following. I think of his work as having great investment value, as well as being fabulous! Other second generation Highwaymen include several progeny of Alfred Hair (Kelvin is a favorite of mine!), R. A. McLendon , and others.
