Wenzel Tornøe was one of the best known Danish artists who exhibited at the Charlottenborg Palace, the Danish Royal Academy. There is a label verso of a type used by Charlottenborg indicating that this was probably an exhibition piece. He was known for his poignant and anecdotal portraiture and genre pieces. Large examples of his work can be expensive with the auction record of £34,000. He exhibited extensively including at The Royal Danish Academy and the World Exhibition Chicago.
Condition
The painting is in excellent condition. The velvet gold frame slip is time worn particularly at the bottom.
