Portrait of Emma Hamilton Manner of Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807)
An exquisite pastel drawing of a late 18th century woman in the manner of Angelica Kauffman. Inscription in French verso reads “ Portrait of Lady Hamilton by Angelica Kauffman” The portrait is initialled “AK” at 4 o’clock. It is known that in 1793 Kauffman sketched Lady Hamilton. I suspect that this is a copy of an original work By Kauffman. However, whether this is Lady Hamilton, or an unknown French beauty it is a fine example of a decorative late 18th century pastel.
Condition
Good strong colours. The frame has minor restoration. There is a 2cm scratch on the edge of the glass at 9 o’clock.
