This wonderful Mid-Century red and white striped Salt and Pepper Shaker Set Designed by Yona for Shafford, Japan, is named Country Club. The bright red and white stripes set a fun picnic atmosphere, or even a circus feeling, and will be great at your next party! The width of the red stripes fluctuates with the shape of each shaker and average about 1/2 inches wide. Both shakers are solid red on top. Each has its original rubber stopper, but it is easy to tell that they have hardened over the years and will likely crumble when removed, so these will need to be replaced before use. Each whimsical shaker is labeled respectively with a large “S” and “P” in black script. This set does not follow the conventional rules, with three holes on the pepper and only two on the salt shaker. Whether this was intentional or a manufacturing error is unknown. Yona was once a student of Hedi Schoop before starting her own pottery in California, then apparently contracting this design to Shafford, Japan.

Each tapered and bulbous shaker measures 5-inches tall and about 2-1/2 inches in diameter at its widest near the bottom and just an inch at the top. The circular foot is 1-3/8 inches in diameter.

Designed by Yona Ceramics circa the 1950s, each is marked in black “Country Club Designed by Yona 8748Y.” The red and gold Shafford Shield foil label is present on the Salt shaker, though wrinkled and torn, and reads “Styled By Shafford.”

The colors are bright with minimal wear. There is a bit of red bleed from one of the stripes on the pepper. Though the bottoms show shelf wear, there are no chips or cracks. The Country Club line often shows crazing, and there may be some here, but it is non-discolored and nearly imperceptible. The remnant of the paper label is on the salt shaker as previously noted. These are vintage pottery pieces and may have additional minor flaws that do not detract.

To preserve the finish, be sure to wash these pieces by hand.
