This silver on copper mixed metals letter opener made in the aesthetic style with cherries and foliage was made by the La Pierre company. The cherries are made of copper and the foliage is made in silver. There was an entire desk set made in this pattern.
The La Pierre company was started in the late 1880s in New York City with Frank H. La Pierre having a small shop at 18 East 14th St. making a variety of novelties and small wares. In 1895 he was incorporated in New Jersey. By 1929 the La Pierre business was purchased by the International Silver Company.
This letter opener is approximately 9 1/2 inches long and retains much of its original cherry red patina. It is in very good used antique condition with age appropriate wear. From the front, one would think that maybe the letter opener was only made of copper. It is not until you turn it over that you find that the reverse is all silver.
The letter opener is marked with the La Pierre logo and the words "SILVER & COPPER".
