A pair if Continental scissors in the form of a standing male soldier with sword blade spear to the front and full completion of uniform dress with sword to the reverse. There are no markings. I've tested these to be at least 800 silver. Upon magnification there are traces of gilt gold areas, which leads me to suspect the pair was originally gilt. The detail of the soldiers uniform suggests to me it may be Spanish or Portuguese from the 15th to 16th centuries. From the front it appears the soldier is standing between the blades with his legs spread apart standing on the finger holds. It is of interest that his right hand holds the sword blade spear, while the left is clench fist behind his back. He is wearing a helmet. Please see my photos for a more detailed visual description. I've described these scissors as vintage but feel they are much older that 50 years. I cannot find another pair in reference like them.
I found these unusual scissors on my English travels.
Very good condition. The blades are not sharp and the purpose of these unusual scissors is not known to me. There is slight wobble to the pair connected at the appropriated area. Offered as found with original patina. 4" in length by 2 inches wide when closed. Opens to full extension. Weight 36.8 grams
