During the 1940's, a trend for Victorian Revival jewelry emerged. This lovely brooch is an example of the replication of a mourning brooch, which in Victorian time would have been made of Whitby Jet. This early plastic version even refracts light, as real jet does. The brooch measures 2-1/4 inches by 2 inches. The center features an oval, done in relief of a "classical" young woman. In theory, this would be the person meaning mourned. The design is continued by "rays" emanating from the oval, creating texture and depth. The reverse is flat and plain, with the original pin back being riveted on. It has a "C" shaped clasp while the straight pin fitting into the "C" slips down a little when not worn, it is secure when attached to clothing.
