I am thrilled to offer one of the earliest of dolls made by David Chapman and Paul Robinson, who created wood doll replicas as The Old Pretenders. I contacted them to get some information on her since she was not marked Old Pretenders. If you are a collector of wooden dolls, you know the quality of dolls that David and Paul offer. Not only is the carving of the wood features fantastic, but their clothing made of antique fabrics is so exquisite! This doll shows that quality, she is exquisite! Note: the last picture of her without any clothing was sent to me by them. I did not remove her clothing.
Per Paul, "she is one of our very earliest examples (as in among the first 5 or so) as we had only started to make English Woodens in 2002." She is approx. 16" tall. A perfect cabinet size! Some other details, per Paul "When we first started making our woodens we were having a devil of a time finding suitable eyes and commissioned special order pupiless silicone eyes for use in our dolls. Her wig is fashioned of tinted flax and the textiles are for the most part (except for her shamrock shawl) 18th century. She was not patterned after any particular doll but her dress is a somewhat generic interpretation of mid century style (1750 – 1780). So I’d say she is just sort of a character type faced English wooden.
I love her facial expression, the rouged cheeks and multiple beauty spots on her face! Painting of the delicate eyebrows with the very fine vertical accent lines is exquisite as are her eyelashes. Her wig is styled wonderfully! And her clothing....beautiful detail with embroidery and the most gorgeous floral patterned brocade. Wonderful fabric shoes. She is a hard one for me to give up!
She is in remarkable condition with her antique costume in fine shape. She is special!
